House Cleaning Supplies and Storage

March 31, 2009

With so many different kinds of cleaners and supplies that are needed to properly clean a house, the issue of safe and proper storage comes up fairly often. Equipment and tools are a whole other matter, too. Which ones are suitable for you? Do the more expensive ones mean that they do a better job cleaning? It can be difficult to tell these days what you should use in your home and which ones you should not worry about having as a necessity.

Trying to do a good housecleaning job with tools and equipment that is in poor condition is probably one of the worst things that a person can do! A good and simple rule of thumb is that if it is broken, replace it as soon as possible. Dont try to still use the broom with the handle that busted that you have to bend over to the floor to clean with! Spend the eight bucks and get a new one. The problem is this: it is hard enough to clean with proper cleaning supplies and equipment, but when you have tools to work with that make it even harder, the chances of you doing a good job are pretty slim, and you dont want to waste your time when you clean you always want to be as time efficient as possible.

A word of caution that has to do with cleaning solutions and chemicals: there might be times that you only have a little bit of a solution left in the bottle, but you dont need to use it right now and you also dont want to throw it away. Never, ever combine chemicals to save space or for any other reason! This is very dangerous, and can even prove to be deadly. A chemical cleaning solution by itself can have fumes that are pretty dangerous to breathe in. When you combine two or more chemicals, though, those fumes can become far more than irritating very quickly. If you cannot use the little bit that you have left in your bottle, it is probably best to just grin and bear it and keep the bottle until you need it again.

A lot of people like to store their cleaning products in places that are convenient for them to grab. The problem is that if it is easy for you to grab, it is more than likely pretty easy for a young child to grab it, too. Make sure that if you keep chemicals somewhere that is reachable by toddlers and kids you have the cabinet locked. If you opt to store them somewhere on a shelf, be sure that they are always out of reach for children. The places that you choose to store these cleaning supplies in should also be out of the reach of pets.

If you own a home that has more than one floor, experts agree that the easiest place to store them that is a safe place is great on EACH floor. If you have two floors they recommend having two sets of cleaning supplies so that you dont have to run all over creation looking for the things you need. Designate a special area for your cleaning equipment, and stick to that on each of your floors.

Finally, whether we are talking about machines, tools, or solutions, be sure to follow all guidelines on the labels and know how to properly take care of your things. Youll save a lot of money in the long run when you have supplies that are in good condition and perform the way they are supposed to perform as they help you to clean your home.

The Basics of Self Portrait

March 28, 2009

Self portraits have been very popular even in the ancient period. A self portrait is a picture where the subject is the self or the artist. These kinds of portraits started in the ancient times or ancient period. This was the time of the rise of thrives of Egyptian and Greek civilization. The self portrait is usually present in the vases of Greeks and hieroglyphics of Egyptians.

Nowadays, there are many ways to make a self portrait. These self portraits vary in the manifestation of the artist himself or herself. Most of the modern self portraits are in the painting classification. Painting has been a popular media for visual representation.

During the renaissance period, the elegant self portraits are bold and very innovative. These portraits come in the usual nude self portraits.

People have been into self portraits for many reasons. During early times, the male species are given more emphasis, the reason there were a larger number of male self portraits done compared to female portraits. The popularity of female self portraits increased in the time of female liberalism.

The very common self painting and the oldest ones are done in charcoal. This is the oldest material used as art material. The large drawings are made with powdered charcoal which was the simplest material. These powdered charcoals are applied in the cotton. The cotton is used to swab. It is then manipulated with finger tips and erasers. These portraits have the application of fixative.

There are generally three forms of coal. First is the vine charcoal, created by wood of burning sticks that are in the consistencies of soft, medium or hard. Second, there is compressed charcoal. It is a mixture of charcoal powder and gum binder being compressed into sticks that are round or square. And last is powdered charcoal. It is usually used to tone or cover larger sections of drawing surfaces.

One disadvantage of charcoal is that is can be erased or smudged easily unless the application can be filed in the form of gum or resin. Although there are other materials that last longer than charcoal, there is still best part of using charcoal that is the spontaneity and sensitivity that is present in the drawing medium. Charcoal is fast, direct and responsive. These are the least inhibiting area of the charcoal.

Charcoal can produce bold and fluid lines. They are also a great host of textures. This is the only drawing material that is capable of imitating the painting of Chinese that uses ink brush. This kind of painting can be on a free paper that is white 100% acid or on watercolor board. Charcoal has been an extensive use for developing self portrait globally. This has been proven despite its tendency to dust off. But there are ways that are made by people put some remedy in this drawback. There are people who uses glass frames or fixative sprays.

Another form of self portrait is the black and white self portrait. This is the most contemporary form of self portrait. One limitation of black and white portraits is the misconception. Many people limit the black and whiter self portrait as a charcoal made.

This contemporary portrait that is black and white can be a photograph. This self portrait can also come in oil canvas. They can come with a dramatic effect.

There is so much to be learned about self portrait. Many people are trying to do a self portrait but only a few are successful to have their own self portrait. But one must not be frustrated if in case they are not successful of having a self portrait.

Quilting - Considering Some Of The Best Books

March 28, 2009

Whether you are a beginning quilter, or an advanced practitioner of the craft, you will find many books on quilting that will help advance your knowledge. Quilting books fall roughly into several categories, and numerous titles abound in each. The categories of books are how-to, pattern encyclopedias, historical, books about the joy of quilting, and art books.

How-to books are probably the most popular, and the first stop for the beginning quilter. They range from books which discuss the overall craft of quilting and give step-by-step instructions, to books which will take one aspect of quilting and explain how to do it. The instructional books start with such basics as fabric selection and which tools you'll need and proceed through instructions for assembling the blocks of the quilt top and the quilt itself, down to explanations of quilting, both hand and machine. Every quilter needs at least one of these books in her library, and usually will manage to collect a number of them. It's amazing how many times you need a ready reference when you are in the middle of a quilting project.

Another type of book that every quilter will want to have on hand is an encyclopedia of patterns. These books collect many different quilt block patterns and show the basics of their assemblies. Because their aim is to cover a lot of ground, these books are valuable starting points but won't go into intimate detail. For that you need to turn to books which feature instruction on a specific pattern. With the wide variety of quilting block patterns and techniques, you can imagine that this category of quilting books is quite extensive and stocked with titles. Books in this category may devote an entire volume to explaining the nuances of, for instance, the Log Cabin pattern.

Because quilting has its roots in American history, quilts and the craft of quilting have been studied extensively, and many historical quilting books exist. Looking at these books and seeing what our ancestors did with a fraction of the materials and supplies available today can be a great source of inspiration to modern quilters. Along the same lines are books which discuss the pleasures to be derived from quilting, both in its social form (such as quilting bees) or as a solitary pursuit. Finally, there is a whole segment of quilters who have advanced the craft into art. These quilters regularly show their work in galleries and museums, and publish books not only about their quilts, but the thoughts and processes that went into making them. Sometimes collectors of quilts will publish books, too. These art quilt books are as inspiring in their way as the historical quilting books.

A good way to choose quilting books that will become a permanent part of your library is to choose a time when you'll have a couple hours of uninterrupted time. Go to the library, or your local bookstore, or fire up your computer and look at books on the internet. Take your time, browse, and get a feel for the vast number of titles out there. You'll no doubt end up with a much longer list than you have time or money for at the moment, but you can purchase or check out a few titles and start a wish list for more.

Part of the joy of quilting is finding books on the topic, and luckily for modern quilters, there is a huge array of titles to choose from.

Have You Completed Your Wood Working Project This Month?

March 27, 2009

Wood working is all about projects so the projects that we will cover will entail a broad spectrum. Chairs, cabinets, benches, shelves, storage, media centers, desks, chest, picture frames, decorations, night stands, work benches, coffee tables occasional tables and just plain wood projects are things that we like to build because they are useful, fun to build and beautiful.

Wood working is becoming a lost art in our world of modern technology, but we all know there is nothing more beautiful than the beauty of wood. Imagine a rich, dark walnut hutch, or a long, deep mahogany dining table. This is a by product of the fiddle business. Some shops include modern and antique equipment that is used as the need arises.

This type work is not just making furniture and other useful products from wood. It is also an art, which involves a lot of artistic skill. Wood working is a craft and the product line from the nice and small Ritter is "fine furniture and cabinetry.

For those interested in original works of art completing their homes. Talk of coarse is cheap and you will need only one look at the Pearwood writing desk to see the design and vision that is unlike any other thing you have probably ever seen.

Wood working is the art or craft that mainly focuses on making or constructing something out of wood. The type of wood you use will differ depending on what type of project you build; from benches to intricate pieces of furniture you can literally build anything you want.

Wood working is as valid and rich as painting and weaving, well, just ask any weaver; I will say no more. This is also evidenced at the site by the presence of gouges that would have been used to manufacture or repair wooden artifacts. It is not known what these wooden artifacts were. This is often largely a solitary endeavor. We just go into our shops and have at it.

This is a job for which one requires to work with precision and skill. Mistakes during wood working may spoil the whole piece. This craft is becoming much more popular with the arts and crafts community.

Hit any of the larger arts and crafts supply stores and they now have a pretty large section of wood working tools and supplies. This can become your business . Some places specialize in furniture, flooring and construction materials such as doors, windows, frames and mouldings.

The production facilities and many reliable business partners ensure that shops can provide high quality products to meet the needs of markets worldwide.A lot of shops specialize in furniture in general, tables, wall units . No pens, no little boxes, no little clocks, no little toys, etc. Furniture is also considered a thing for decorating the interiors of houses or any other place.

For this reason, working with wood is a skillful job. Furniture free woodworking plans are a great way for you to make your own furniture in the comfort of your own workshop and to see some amazing results that you will be proud to share with family and friends.

Although furniture projects are generally a bit harder to complete than smaller wood projects, if you start out small you will soon find yourself trying harder and more difficult projects.

Radio Controlled Boats…Gift Guide and FAQs

March 27, 2009

I have collected the most frequently asked questions about radio controlled boats that gift givers have asked me so they can get their heads around the vast array of choices.

Are all Radio Controlled Boats Ready to Run (RTR)? Broadly, radio controlled boats come in three different types of packages; RTR kits, ARTR kits, and Assembly kits. RTR or ready-to-run need little or no assembly. Some small adjustments may be needed depending on the make of boat e.g. batteries in the boat and transmitter and fuel but they are essentially ready-to-run. They are perfect for the novice enthusiasts. ARTR or almost-ready-to-run involve partial assembly by a person who is either familiar with radio controlled boats or willing to dig into the manuals and videos about the product. Assembly kits are obviously more advanced. They come with all the parts needed to prep the boat for running but they must be assembled. The level of assembly varies but generally you need to be pretty advanced to be able to do this.

So just to be clear...are most RTR boats complete and ready to run? Some RTR boats have battery packs chargers and everything else included in the price however oddly some described as RTR boats often require you to buy a battery pack for the boat and batteries for the transmitter so check carefully. I always make it clear what is required for my boats. I think some people define RTR as "its all included and you open the box and go" and others define it as "ready to run after you add the power packs". So forewarned is forearmed.

How are they Powered? Radio controlled boats are made in three main types: electric, nitro, and gas versions. Electric are more popular because they are so easy to operate. Nitro boats use Nitro-methane fuel and gas boats use a regular car gas and oil mix.

How Easy are they? I find that the faster the boat the better skills you have to have. To control the boat you have to make minute changes on a radio transmitter to make the boat do what you want it to do. Doing this at 20mph is far easier than doing it at 50+mph. If you have a huge space and nobody else around you can let loose but more often than not other people are around. Even though small they can injure and do damage if they hit somebody and something. So beginners usually start with electric boats. The bigger and more expensive nitro and gas boats also need maintenance and tuning so you also have to be prepared for that. If you don't want to tinker with an engine stick to electric at least to start and get a feel.

What are these boats like? Electric is the least expensive and easiest to operate. They do however get slower as the run time progresses and the battery power is depleted. Nitro boast are mid price range, fairly easy to operate and nitro engines deliver say 25 mins of run time per tank and it s all at full power while there is fuel in the tank. Gas boats get the highest speed and use simple pull start engines that run on regular car gas mixed with 2 cycle oil. They run for up to 45 minutes on a tank.

How fast do they go? This gets asked a lot. This will vary a lot depending on the boat and how or if you tune them but you can expect electric boats to get between 15-20mph, Nitro boats between 30-35mph and gas to reach 40 to 45mph range. There are boats that are fine tuned to go well over 100mph - but that's obviously an expert level.

Can I run them anywhere? How well do they run in ponds rivers etc? Radio controlled boats can run on rivers, ponds, the sea and even pools. However they face a big problem if pond or sea weed is in the water. Radio control boats use rudder and propeller systems that are submerged into the water and they get snagged by the weed. Now this is similar to real boats except that the real boat engines have a great deal more torque and can generally cut through or break the weed (but not always). A boat running in weeds will bog down and most likely get stuck - the moral of the story is to run in clear water which will give you so much more fun.

What are the most common accessories for boats? Most electric boats require at least one and sometimes two 6 cell 7.2V battery packs. And you will need a charger to recharge them once depleted. Nitro boats require special nitro fuel and a starter kit to get the engine going. Gas boats use regular auto fuel mixed with 2 stroke oil. Refer back to the second question about RTR boats and what that really means.

Adventures In Gold And Rock Hounding

March 26, 2009

We just met Two Gentlemen at their rock shop, when we heard the name of their Mine, and it happened to be the same as our last name we wanted to go.

But for the locals it was to cold, temps in the 40's. We had just left 25 degrees below zero Fahrenheit, this was a heat wave to us.

The one gentleman was famous, but we didn't know it at the time, his nickname was the Geode Kid, he even had a museum in the town of Deming, New Mexico.

It is filled with many beautiful geodes, countless sizes and colors. All very pretty inside, it took many hours of work to find that many Geodes. Plus all the time to cut everyone, then setup the displays, worth the time to stop and visit.

So after we left their Rock Shop we had to find a place where we could go and find our own Geodes. First stop was the Rock Hound State Park headquarters, we asked if there was a place where we could find Geodes.

The first answer was to climb up the mountain to an area where there was a patch of white material all around. My wife of 37 years said she could not climb up that far, bad hips, knee.

We were then informed if we had a four wheel drive with us, we could drive around, on a rough and steep trail, a four wheeler trail, to the back side of the mountain and find some pretty good geodes.

So we made our camp with the RV, and we were off, it was slow going, as it was very rough and steep. The mountain top is used for TV and cell phone towers because it's so tall.

There were many dry washes to explore on the way, and we found several interesting rocks, before we made it to the Geodes.

The Geodes we found we not as nice as the one's the Geode Kid had in his Rock Shop, they were great to us because we found them on our own. It was hard to extract them, the hard rock all around them made it difficult to save them all in perfect condition.

All in all it was a very good day in Deming, New Mexico at the Rock Hound State Park, by the way the camping rates are very reasonable, and you don't have to purchase a State Park permit, like you would have to in Minnesota.

The next day my wife got out a book of where we could go to collect different minerals, and a type of Agate, not Lake Superior Agate like we have in Minnesota.

After what seemed to be half the day, not really, we finally found the place we were looking for, or at least we think we did. We looked for quite some time before my wife squealed with excitement, for she had one of the elusive Agates in her hands.

Very pretty it was the color of a Dreamsicle, or a transparent orange, and it was very nice size. Well worth the effort to find something so rare.

We went a little farther down the road only to find an old abandoned mine, Hummm it said to my self, I wonder what treasures could be found there?

I had to stop and take a look around, and besides it was a great place to go off road with the Geo. After a bit of exploring we found the main mine shaft, it had been filled in back in the nineteen forties, so it looked safe.

I just had to get a closer look, there just might be a treasure or two laying about. My wife said don't go near that old mine you might fall in, but curiosity got the best of me, and when I went over to the mine to look inside there was a vein of fluorite.

10 Tips for the Perfect Glamour Shot

March 26, 2009

For the director involved in glamour model photography, arms pose no problems...if he remembers the following points:

1. All final instruction must come from you, the director, who can see what the camera is doing to the arms.

2. Keep the model's arms and hands from reaching toward or away from the camera
to any great degree.

3. Tapered positions of the hand add length to the arm and bold positions shorten it.

4. Both arms do not have to show in every picture. In fact, in most positions, placing one arm behind the body often gives clean delineation to the body's outline. But if the forearm does not show, it is best not to let the hand pop out of the outline unexpectedly. It is quite distracting to a viewer to see a hand appearing from nowhere at the waistline or to notice a strange bump in a pocket.

5. Sharp angles at the elbow can be softened, if desired, by moving the elbow slightly toward or away from the camera and a right angle (from the camera's viewpoint) can be made obtuse by the same action.

6. An arm can always be made to appear more slender by diverting the wide inner elbow and flat forearm away from the camera. There is a popular misconception that the full width of the elbow cannot be turned away from the camera without turning the hand also. Nevertheless, it is possible and most models can do it naturally or with a little practice ... whether the hand is supporting the body or not.

7. Keep the elbow away from the waistline. If the arms must cross a standing figure, they should do so above or below the waist line. An elbow at the waistline makes the body appear thick, heavy and masculine unless an air space or contrast of tone prevents the arms from attaching themselves to the silhouette and adding weight and bulk to the outline.

8. Soft flesh is distorted by pressure. When the soft part of the arm presses into a harder surface it may lose its smooth outline. Pressure can be eased by leaning lightly, or when possible, carrying most of the weight on the hard parts of the arm such as the shoulder bone, elbow, wrist or hand.

9. An arm supporting the weight of the body, should not reveal too much rigidity or tension. Strain can be eased by better weight distribution or a momentary shift to ease it just before the picture is taken.

10. When thought is put into the proper location of the elbow, no additional adjustment of the upper arm is necessary. Also, with the capricious forearm secure at one end, all creative effort can be concentrated on the location of the other end of the forearm and the position of the hand.

When involved in glamour model photography have you ever had the perfect picture -except that the arms didn't look like mates? One was too thick while the other was too thin? Did you ever have a hand look like a stump? If you did, distortion and foreshortening are not new to you. You know the havoc they can play with important pictures. But HOW can you communicate this to your model without going into complicated or technical detail?

It's simple if we take a tip from stage directors and chalk guide lines right on the floor. Make two lines parallel to each other and at right angles to your lens. Place your model between them and explain that she is standing between two imaginary large panes of glass that have been set upon those lines.

(The space between the glass depends upon the distance from which you are shooting and shouldn't be more than 14 or 16 inches apart if you are working fairly close.) Show her that the glass will limit her movements to positions acceptable to the camera.

Help her adapt the idea by letting her move her arms between the imaginary boundaries. Stop her when she strays out of bounds! A few minutes of experimenting will give her confidence.

Glamour model photography can be very satisfying and rewarding work. Work with your model and you will be rewarded with great pictures!
