For The Love Of Hiking

My husband and I are always on the lookout for activities that we can do together that don't require a whole lot of money, ie it's cheap. Particularly in these economic times when our budget dollar is being squeezed from all directions it's even more important to us than ever that we spend our money wisely.

We both have hobbies and activities that we pursue independently, but we were looking for something that we could do together as a couple. Neither one of us is interested in ballroom dancing, I'm into yoga and swimming, he's into the treadmill and the elliptical, I'm into cross stitching and reading, he's into online poker, and neither of us have an interest in the other's hobbies.

We wanted to do something that we could pursue as a couple, that would get us out of the house and into the fresh air, and that didn't cost an arm and a leg. Given that we live in a part of the country that has abundant forests and lakes we thought we'd try hiking.

It's as if a whole new world has opened up to us! We started slowly, hiking for a couple of hours by visiting provincial parks within a two hour drive of our home and bought a seasonal pass to save on entrance fees. We discovered one park within an hour of home that offers five different trails over varying terrain with spectacular paths that meandered through forests, around small lakes, and through marshes.

We undertook our first few hikes wearing just our running shoes and comfortable clothing. It soon became clear though that we needed to upgrade our footwear to something other than regular shoes, so we waited for a clearance sale at a local sporting goods store and scored big time with half price purchases on sturdy three season hiking boots.

Over the summer our hikes increased in length until we were comfortable hiking for about four hours. We discovered trails we never even knew existed by going online and searching out trails within a two hour drive from home. One particular trails stands out as there were caves and caverns to explore along with both old growth and new growth forests in an area previously inhabited by a First Nation's tribe, signs of which could still be found hundreds of years later provided you knew what to look for.

If you're planning to do some hiking, do invest in proper footwear; your ankles will thank you. Buy a couple of stainless steel water bottles, lots of sunscreen and insect repellant as well as a first aid kit that includes a whistle, compass, bandages, and antiseptic. Buy a couple of backpacks that are big enough to carry a jacket, the items above and food such as sandwiches, granola bars and nuts, but make sure it's not so big as to invite you to pack more than you can carry because after a few hours the weight will become very noticeable.

I highly recommend this as an activity that you can do together as a couple. We loved spending time together, away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, in beautiful surroundings with only the sound of the birds, the insects, and the wind in the trees.

Working in my dad's gift shop twelve years ago, I was amazed at the craze formed by TY with the creation of their beanie baby range. At the height of their popularity, I'd be lucky to count ten minutes between taking the soft toys out of their delivery box and popping them into a carrier bag at the registrar, ready to be taken home by yet another excitable customer. With a fan base ranging from toddler to grandparents, a sense of hysteria occasionally swamped the store and often left me feeling more like I was at a pop concert than in a small gift shop in the heart of Suffolk. So what was it that led to the cult of TY beanie babies and that still exists today, fifteen years later?

I often wonder what it is about being a collector that attracts so many of us. From stickers as a youngster to model airplanes later in life, purchasing every single item in a range of consumerables has been a favourite pastime for decades.

Perhaps it's the sense of achievement it creates, or the sheer anticipation of collecting the next addition. When TY launched their soft toy range in the form of beanie babies in 1993, audiences all over the world were instantly hooked. Effectively toy-like bean bags, their initial launch included just nine soft toys including Legs the Frog, Squealer the Pig, Spot the Dog, Flash the Dolphin, Splash the Whale, Chocolate the Moose, Patti the Platypus and Brownie the Bear and Punchers the Lobster. It didn't take them long for them to become a huge phenomenon, continuing all the way through the 1990's as the collection continued to grow.

Customers range from those spending literally hundreds of British pounds on a 'retired' collector such as peanut the elephant or early versions of zip the cat, to young children who had saved their pocket money for weeks to buy one of the standard toys. The collection includes soft toys for all occasions (such as Easter, Christmas and Halloween) to characters (think Garfield and more recently, SpongeBob Squarepants) to every imaginable animal, mammal or creature, each christened with its own individual name. The full collection must run into hundreds.

Everybody loves soft toys and Beanie Babies are certainly no exception. Soft to touch and cute to look at, most people can find a creature that represents a favourite animal, a fond memory, a celebratory occasion (such as a new baby) or even just a friendly token gesture. Priced competitively and small in size, they have been a perfect gift for the past ten years.

One of their greatest marketing creations was the holiday bear. A soft toy unique to various occasions such as April Fool's Day or specific locations, including Canada, USA, Ireland and Australia, these bears were always harder to get hold of than the usual range and were usually more expensive. The beanie babies unique to specific locations were generally only available in those countries, making them much more of a collector's item. Similarly, many of the popular bears would quite often become 'retired' shortly after their launch, further fuelling the collectors' bug.

While TY decided to pull the plug and stop making the soft toys in 1999, continued popular demand caused Ty Warner to change his mind and now continues to run TY Inc, and is still designing new beanie babies today. It's a phenomenon that hit the world and the ripples are still being felt, as sales still continue to soar. What started as nine cute companions is now a worldwide phenomenon.

That’s How We Roll, Y’all: How To Roll A Cigar

Everybody has had that one friend: the guy who always, no matter what the inconvenience to himself or the implications for the cleanness of his floors, rolled his own cigarettes. Even if reasonably-priced ones were available, this friend just liked to get (as the saying goes) his fingers dirty.

Some people just like to do everything themselves.
But on the other hand, most folks who smoke never think to try rolling our own smokes. And for those who only enjoy tobacco in the long-burning, contemplative form of a cigar, the idea is still less likely to occur. Cigar rolling is, after all, an art, which is why we pay extra for hand-rolled premium cigars.

Cigar hand-rolling is so complicated an operation that people have spent their lives mastering it. Cuban cigar factories even used to employ lectors, people whose job it was to read full-time to the mass of hard-working cigar rollers, so that the job would not become unduly tedious. (That job is often done today by books-on-CD, which is one of the few ways that the production of truly premium cigars allows for automation.)

But it can be done, and sometimes, when you've smoked the last fine stogies in your humidor and have a few spare leaves and some wrapper leaves sitting around to spare--and admittedly, this is not the world's likeliest scenario--here are the instructions for hand-rolling your own cigar. Or, of course, if you're really curious, you could take the far more logical step of attending one of the many cigar-rolling contests sponsored around the country every year by Cigar Aficionado magazine, all of which culminate in the annual Super Roll roll-off, hosted in part by La Gloria Cubana. Reaching its sixth year in 2008, this now-annual tradition allows amateur cigar lovers to do some practice rolling and, if they're good, strut their stuff. The smaller rolling contests (which are just preparation for the Super Roll) are held at Cigar Aficionado's several-times-a-year Big Smoke events. Check the Web for the one nearest you.

At any rate, here's what you do:
Get hold of some good filler tobacco--not the chopped-up stuff you use in a pipe or cigarette, but full leaves of it. The higher the quality, the better.
Take the filler leaves and cut away the upper and lower edges. (You'll find it's surprisingly delicate to the touch.) Take the chopped bunch of filler and place it across the wrapper's edge. Remove the wrapper's veins with your fingernails. Rub glue (vegetable-based) along the wrapper and firmly roll the wrapper together around the filler. (You can also use egg white in place of glue. At least, some folks do. Who knew cigars could also be high in fat?)
Voila! It's that easy!

The hard part, of course, is doing it well, so that the cigar doesn't fall apart, grow uneven, burn funny, or get lumpy. If you overfill the cigar, you get one problem (the cigar can't burn because air won't flow through it); if it's too loose, you get the opposite problem (excessive heat and fast burn). It takes some practice.

Don't, in the heat of success, smoke your fresh-rolled cigar right away. It needs a few weeks to age. Put it in your humidor (as you would any other new-bought cigar) and wait.

If this little primer is too abstract for you, many videos can be found online which offer graphical instruction for those who'd like to roll their own cigars.

In any case, it's something any cigar lover should try just once. Most people who love to read, try writing a story at some point in their lives; some of the best movie directors started out as critics (Francois Truffaut, for example); jazz listeners have been known to take piano lessons at an advanced age. And why not? Trying your hand at creating the thing that delights you can only increase your appreciation for the skill and craftsmanship involved. The Airbrush, Are You Good With It? You Can Be!

The use of airbrush began as early as the year 1876. It was first registered by Francis Edgar Stanley of Newton, Massachusetts. It was later developed by Abner Peeler who used a hand controlled air compressor and it was used for creating artworks.

The materials he used for the idea of his airbrush are spare parts in a jewelry shop like old screw drivers and welding torches. It was improved after 4 years and was sold by Liberty Markup. In 1893, the design for the modern type airbrush has been created by Charles Burdick. Burdicks company, the Aerograph, is still producing and selling airbrushes in England.

Creating airbrush art is one of the most famous hobbies for modern day artists. Instead of using the traditional type paint brushes, they use a tool called the airbrush. The airbrush is a modern painting tool, usually a small spray gun that is controlled by air and by the process of nebulization.

The latest type of air brushes uses air compressors to generate air for the spray gun. There also many uses for the airbrush tool. You can use it for making art and illustrations, photo retouching, coating firearms, murals, hobbies, make up application, temporary tattoos, airbrush tanning, finger nail art, clothing and painting automotive.

An airbrush works by passing a stream of compressed air through a venturi that creates a local reduction in air pressure that pulls up the paint from a connected paint reservoir at normal atmospheric pressure. The speed of the air atomizes the paint and changes it into very little paint droplets that spreads out from the airbrush nozzle. The quantity of the paint and air can be controlled by a trigger. There are two classes of airbrush triggers.

There are two major types of airbrush, the single action trigger and dual action trigger. Airbrushes that are using single action triggers are the simplest and cheapest of airbrushes.

When you press a single action trigger, the air and paint flows into the airbrush body and the atomized paint is releases on the target surface. Single action of activating the trigger releases a certain ratio of paint to air.

To change the different line width of the spray output, you may modify the size or style of the tip of the nozzle or you can adjust the spray volume manually between spray width changes. When you use single action trigger, just remember to keep your hand moving before and after you let go the trigger to avoid some bar bell lines.

The second type airbrush trigger is the double action trigger. It separates the air and the paint while doing your job. This kind of trigger uses a different system for both paint and air. The painter could adjust the volume of air and paint for wanted artistic styles.

This kind of trigger is much more complex to use since you need to control two systems. It is much more expensive than the single trigger action. A technique for using this is to begin and end with air only.

Loading paint into the airbrush can be done in two ways. You can supply paint by having a paint container placed on the top of the brush and have gravity load the paint to the airbrush. This system is called gravity feed. Another way is through bottom feed or side feed.

With these methods, the paint container is positioned either on the side or bottom of the airbrush. Gravity feed uses less air pressure for paint suction since it uses gravity for loading paint. The advantages of the side and bottom feed airbrushes is it allows the artist to have a top view of the paintbrush.

It also allows left and right handed artist to suit their preferences. Bottom feed airbrushes can handle a larger volume of paint and is mostly used for large paint jobs like automotive painting and clothing art.

In combining paints, there are two ways, the internal mix and external mix. The Internal mix airbrush is when the paint and air blend inside the airbrush creating a finer atomized mist of paint.

With the external mix airbrushes, the air leaves the airbrush before it reaches the paint which creates a coarser stippled effect. The latter is usually the cheaper type and more suitable for painting larger areas.

Ways to Correct the Most Common Flaws in Digital Photos

As you are probably eager to start experimenting with your pictures in a photo editing application, this article is aimed to help you with a few ideas to get started. It refers to Adobe Photoshop in particular, but other image editing software works the same. Without becoming to technical or going into all the specific functions you can experiment on your own, it aims to provide you with easy ways to do some changes to your photo.

Red eye removal
In many photos made with flash, people have red eyes. In photoshop, you can easily remove them with the Brush tool. You first zoom in, then drag to a precise area with the Hand tool. Select a proper brush size to work on the pupils area. Use color mode at low opacity in order ti keep the details in the image but colorize the areas you choose. Then zoom out to see how it turned out like and make the final touches if necessary. Choosing a feather brush instead of a solid one will make the picture look more natural. Another method to remove red eyes is using Ellipse Selection. Select the pupil areas and add a feather in order to make the selection edge less sharp. Then use the red eye removal button.

Correcting flashlight effects
The flash can sometimes make a person's face look to white and it would help to make it darker. The first method to improve it is from the Adjustments and Variations option. Select Highlights, then click Darker on the scale 3-4 times and OK. A slightly better way to do this is to select the pale areas with the Polygon Lasso or another selection tool that works in the same way. After that, use a feather to soften edges of the selected area (the size should be around 6). On the selected area, use the Brighten function and decrease brightness until you are satisfied.

Cropping and zooming
You might want to remove some background from the photo. Before cropping, you could zoom in to get an idea about how the picture will look like. You can crop and resize the photo at the same time, keeping the resolution constant. Be careful not to enlarge the photo too much as it will look pixelated. Don't go lower than 150dpi with your resolution or you won't be able to get good prints. Now your picture looks much better, with highlights adjusted, red eyes removed and cropping to bring forward the subject.

Careful brighting
Take, for instance, a photo of a cherry tree. You might want to brighten the cherry blossom to highlight details, but not the background sky, which is already bright enough. With the Brighten option you can make the whole picture brighter, which is not good. From the Adjustment and a Variations option in the Image File tab you choose Shadows/Midtones, set the scale between Fine and Course and click Lighter a few times. This will make the cherry blossoms clearer without brightening the rest of the photo.

Another way to do this is using a Levels feature from the Adjustment option and moving the slider in the Midtones range slightly towards Dark. When the shading is lighter, you can also adjust brightness and contrast. Yet another method is to choose the Color Range and sample the sky area, creating a selection of parts of the sky. Then you inverse the selection, choose a feather sized around 3, and adjust brightness and contrast until you are satisfied.

Colorizing water
Imagine a photo of two swans taken on a gloomy day, with the water looking a bit muddy. You can use the Magic Wand (which selects areas by color tone) or Color Range tool. Then adjust the tolerance value - the higher you set it, the wider the area selected. After you're good with the selection, apply a feather sized 3 and in the Adjustment option click Hue/Saturation to achieve a deep blue color. Move the slider until you are happy with the color, then use the brush at low opacity to paint over the area (like in the red eye removal technique).

This is probably enough information to digest and hopefully it gave you some tips for basic image correction. Now you can start experimenting with one photo and see how these tips work.
