The first thing to know about Brazil is that its big - in resources, landmass, and people. Its the fifth-largest country in the world, and the fifth most populous. Among the worlds pro forma democracies, it ranks fourth in population size, and it controls a powerful economy, ranking ninth in the world in purchasing power. Its a diverse country, too, with one hundred-eighty-eight living languages, and, interestingly enough, the worlds largest confirmed reserve of uncontacted peoples small pre-industrial tribes that, for all practical purposes, have stayed sealed off from the rest of the world. In this single nation, then, an ultramodern economy exists side-by-side with some of the worlds last refuges of pre-industrial life, and gleaming cities Sao Paulo and Brasilia share the same boundary with huge swaths of rainforest.
What kind of culture does such a diverse country produce Well - a similar situation produced artistic riches for the United States, and things are hardly any different for Brazil. Consider tropicalismo, one of the countrys major artistic exports. This musical movement, spearheaded by the legendary band Os Mutantes and the singer-songwriters Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, and manic genius Tom Ze among others, fuses all the diverse musics of this country along with a hefty dose of Bob Dylan, Velvet Underground and jazz to create some of the best-regarded music of the 1970s. Whatever political and logistical headaches it may pose, such bursting-at-the-seams diversity is good fortune for any artist lucky enough to benefit from it.
Like many Latin American countries and like the US, Brazil was originally the colony of an ambitious European nation - in this case, Portugal. Led by its Portuguese-born regent, Pedro I, the country won its independence in 1822. What followed was a long power struggle between Pedro eventually replaced by his son Pedro II, various rebelling factions of the population, and the countrys economically dominant classes, who found Pedro variously useful and irksome, depending on the situation. Following the deposition of Pedro II in 1889, the country became a republic; during the twentieth century, though, Brazil fell frequently to military coups, some of them most infamously in 1964 made possible by covert US assistance. Its current relative freedom has lasted only since 1985.
Made up of twenty-six states and a federal district think Washington, D.C., the countrys exports include among others coffee, iron ore, ethanol, textiles, shoes, and cars. With a major modernizing initiative underway - in 2007, the countrys government, under President Luis Ignacio DaSilva, dedicated three hundred billion dollars to renovating power plants, roads and ports - Brazil clearly intends to keep those exports booming. Including tobacco Well - thats dicier. Brazil is incredibly rich in natural resources, but that rainforest shrinks every day. The resulting controversy raises issues for tobacco farmers: only a sustainable ecology will ensure that Brazil continues to yield those fine tobacco crops, and yet some sustainability measures may threaten farmers short-term profits small farmers, many of them, and small profits. Its a difficult balance.
More threatening, perhaps, for those of us who value Brazils contribution to cigar culture, is the strength of its anti-smoking movement. The country has some of the toughest anti-smoking laws in the world, funnels large amounts of money into anti-tobacco campaigns, and forbids tobacco-products advertising in any form. Still, the total number of smokers grew slightly during the past decade. Some business experts forecast that the countrys tobacco industry will have to get used to a shrinking overall population of smokers, and concentrate instead on increasing brand value, making better and safer products. Cigars, designed to be used in moderation and savored, may well flourish in this environment. At any rate, the reported use of genetically-modified tobacco crops in the countrys southern region suggests that tobacco-related controversies will continue in Brazil.

How to take Star Photos without a Telescope

There are two basic types of star photos you can take. The first type is a fast picture with an exposure of less than 30 seconds. This type of picture shows the stars as stationary. The second type of picture you can take is a star trail picture. If you leave the shutter of your camera open for an extended period of time the stars will form long tracks on the picture as they cross the sky. Both types are attractive and easy to do. In addition to simply taking pictures of the sky you can add landscape features into the picture. This tends to make the picture very dramatic and especially appealing.
The Equipment you need
aA camera that has the ability to leave the shutter open for long periods of time. This function is often called the bulb function. The camera should have either a B or a T setting. This can be difficult to find with newer digital cameras.
aA roll of high speed film a 800 speed film is good but if you dona t have easy access to this film then 400 speed film will work reasonably well
aA camera tripod or some other means of keeping your camera very still
aA baseball hat or a piece of heavy dark cloth
How to take the pictures
1.Before you go out load your film into the camera and take one indoor picture. This sets the film properly so the developer can see the frames
2.Bring all your equipment outdoors for at least a half hour before you intend to take the pictures. This allows the optics of the camera to adjust to any temperature or humidity difference
3.Set your camera firmly into your tripod
4.Hold the baseball hat or piece of heavy dark cloth over the lens of the camera without touching the camera
5.Activate the shutter button so the shutter opens
6.The camera is now live and the film is ready to be exposed
7.Remove the hat or cloth and this begins the exposure
8.Count off how long you want the exposure to be - A good place to start would be with a ten second exposure
9.Replace the hat or cloth so the lens is once again blocked
10.Close the shutter by releasing the shutter button
That is the whole process of taking a night sky picture. We use the baseball hat because activating the shutter will cause vibration in the camera which could distort the delicate picture you are taking. Just the motion of you pressing the button or the motion of the shutter moving can be enough to ruin the picture and take away the pinpoint sharpness of the stars.
You might be wondering how to keep the shutter open without holding the button down. You can use one of a few different solutions. The first solution is something called a shutter cable release. This is a cable that connects to the shutter button of the camera. Newer cameras might not have this option You press the button on the end of the cable and then lock it in the shutter open position. The second solution is to use a rubber band or some other type of setup to actually hold your shutter button down. I have used a rubber band successfully on a basic 35mm camera.
About the Exposure lengths
You should take a notebook with you and keep track of the exposure time for each picture you snap. This way you can judge which exposures worked the best and when you try again on another night your pictures will be improved. Remember to start out by taking a picture of a household object so the first picture on the frame will be correctly set for the developer. Then take your night sky photos with different time intervals starting at 5 seconds. Then progress to some 30 second shots and 1 minute shots.
Depending on what part of the sky you are taking photos of once you get over 30 seconds the stars will start to leave trails on the film. You can take exposures of several hours to get really long and attractive star trails. A minimum of about 20 minutes will leave a detectable and attractive trail.
Improving your Star pictures
To get the best pictures try to get the darkest skies possible. Light pollution from houses, streetlights and other city sources can wash out your picture. Also you can add earth bound objects to the picture. Silhouettes of buildings trees or other land based objects under a starry sky can make a very attractive picture. If you have a nearby object that you want in the picture but it is too dark you can even shine a flashlight on it while the film is being exposed. This will illuminate the object with a soft glow but not ruin the picture.
When bringing your film to the developer make sure you tell them that you have taken night time star photos and that all the pictures should be developed and printed. As a minimum you should make a note of this on the envelope you put the film in. It will avoid the developer thinking none of the pictures came out and not making any prints.
Astrophotography is the art of taking pictures of night sky objects and there are lots of possibilities for you to experiment in this art without a telescope. All you need is a simple 35mm camera, some high speed film and a few hours under dark skies.

Since arts definition can greatly vary from one person to another, so there are various forms of art you can choose from. However, the things I learn is that it doesnt really matter whatever the form is; youre the one to make the call on the pieces that attract you, and you are the one to decide the amount of money you are willing to spend for such pieces.
On the other day, I had a good chat with my long time friend Alice towards to the art collecting. She is in the art business, because she always on the road, so we hardly get time to meet up with each other. After so long, finally we had a great catch up.
She taught me many new things towards to the art collecting. I decided to share those insight information with you. If you just like me, a person that interested in the art collecting, I hope you find this information helpful.
Alice told me, in the art world, some people may look down on others due to their different tastes in picking out art. Example, there are those people who only buy original works and would never even consider buying prints.
However, she said, if you are a new art collector and just starting collect art, you should take notes. At the beginning, you may feel little bit boring by doing it, but after a while, you will find yourself enjoy doing it. Then you will find originals are not really that necessary to buy, especially if theyre way out of your budget.
When I asked her about buying prints, she told me, there is nothing wrong with buying prints. In fact, these are one superb way to have framed art to put on your wall, it just like how an original would look, but at a way lower price. Compare with the original work, the difference is that you would not be having the same texture as to the original work; originals usually show dimension and texture, while prints wont.
In fact, a lot of art collectors have art prints by different artists, which were bought inexpensively from the Internet, galleries and art fairs. The amazing thing is some of these pieces still look tasteful and classy instead of cheap looking.
Come to the frame up, she told me, once you spot an original or print that you like, you have the option to frame it by yourself or to get somebody else do it for you. Generally, you can find frames in a vast price range, starting from cheaper metal frames to ornate, but hand carved wooden frames is expensive, some of them can cost you a fortune.
With regards to using mats, she told me that it is another way of framing your picture inside its frame, you can use of papers or illustration boards; but the thing to remember here is that such method could detract your print. So her advice is that if you dont know how to frame by yourself, you should get your piece over to people who know how to do it, during the process, you can observe how theyd offer you different mats and frame styles.
In regarding to picking out the mat to use, she said to me, you should take your time and deliberates on it carefully since the mat and frame color combination can have a great effect on how well or bad your artwork would look. You should also consider how the frame would fit-in in whatever place youll put it, like your home or your office.
If you want a clean and contemporary look, Alice recommended that to use the Nielsen brushed metal frames, it is not expensive and it has an elegant looking too. These usually come in different colors. Well, its safe to go for black or bronze. No matter whatever the color you choose to use, as long as it matches with your home decor, then it should be good.
If you are a wood type of person, you can get wooden frames that are naturally stained. When it comes to wooden frames, cherry and mahogany are the most preferred choice since their deep and reddish color can bring an elegant look to any artwork.

In addition to emailing the picture file, it is very convenient, easy, and safe to upload the picture to the company.
The traditional way is to bring the original photograph in hand to a shop that specializes in this type of work. Of course, photos can be mailed to artists as well. Digital photo restoration is safe, inexpensive, and easy to use for the customer.
Photo Restoration: How It Works
The first thing that restoration artists do when they receive an old or damaged picture is to evaluate the damage. Rips, folds, and color issues are addressed, and an estimate of what it will cost to repair the issues is relayed to the customer. One of the greatest things about digital restoration is that the original photograph is NEVER altered. The only thing that is tinkered with is the scanned copy. This is especially important for those who bring their photos into a shop as opposed to emailing or uploading them. The customer then is given the estimate for the work, and the fun begins. Usually within a day or two, thanks to incredible technology today, the customer is shown an initial test version of the picture, restored.
If needed, the client can express their need for any further changes to the photo. If additional changes are requested, the customer will receive another test version for review. Once the customer is satisfied with the restored, fresh looking photo, orders for prints, reprints, and other special services can be ordered and filled.
Digital Restoration: The Benefits
The most obvious benefit to restoring old photos digitally is that the end result is much more suitable for framing and displaying to family and friends. A more colorful, uninterrupted image is much more aesthetically pleasing than a torn, worn, and shorn one. Another great reason to get an old photo retouched is renewability. People can rest easy knowing that there are 50 copies of Great Aunt Louises picture in existence, as opposed to Uncle Hebert having the only copy on the planet.
Retouched or repaired photographs make excellent additions to family trees, histories, and family Bibles, too. People always say that a picture is worth a thousand words, and digital photo restoration is the perfect way to make sure that no matter how many years those words have been around, they will never go unheard.
