The first step to meditation by Mike Pauli

Everybody knows the not feeling-so-well status. Several problems causes that restless feeling in your mind and body. The moments that you don’t feel restless are the moments you have for yourself by yourself and during vacation time. There you become aware of the nicest things in life. Unlocking The Psychic Within by Steve Gunn

Becoming a full time psychic and healer is something that was chosen for me rather than a conscious choice I made. Talk to psychics and many times you’ll find the same story; one of the innate ability being awoken within us at some point in our lives that pushes us to do this work

Building Your Own Grandfather Clock from a Kit

January 29, 2008

The popularity of grandfather clocks has never been greater. Interchangeably referred to as tall case, long case or floor clocks, the venerable grandfather clock has been widely produced since the seventeenth century. Building your grandfather clock from a kit is now easier than ever.

Variations of the classic grandfather clock include the grandmother clock and the granddaughter clock. Grandmother and granddaughter clocks are generally shorter than the average grandfather clock and feature smaller dial faces. Woodworkers, hobbyists and clock enthusiasts have often looked to grandfather clock kits in order to build their own clocks,

Through the years, craftspeople have turned these timepieces into works of aesthetic and musical art. Vintage and antique grandfather clocks have become family heirlooms, passed down for generation to generation. Antique and vintage floor clocks from such famous makers as the Willards, Levi Hutchins and Samuel Mulliken have piqued the interest of collectors from all over the world.

For a number of years, skilled woodworkers have been able replicate popular designs from scratch. The market for grandfather clock kits was, for many years, geared towards hobbyists and collectors who had a good bit of skill at fine woodworking. Thankfully, the market for clock kits has advanced once again.

Designed for hobbyists and clock enthusiasts with average woodworking skill, grandfather clock kits are now available that make the process of creating a master work much easier. Manufacturers of clock kits have designed their products in a way that has taken some of the guesswork out of the process. Without the need for specialized woodworking tools, most kits include most everything you need to build a complete working clock.

Selecting a floor clock kit starts with the case. There is endless variety of styles from which to choose, from the traditional, to designs that are more contemporary. Cases are available in a selection of fine hardwoods such as cherry, oak, walnut and ash. Many of these case kits have been cut and milled to fit together properly. To make assembling the case even easier, some of the more complex components such as a door come preassembled. Holes for hardware such as locks and latches are often predrilled.

Not all wood kits come complete with items such as cabinet glass. Many manufacturers may offer a selection of glass panels, from flat to beveled, as options. Other case options include differing styles of hardware such as locks, latches and hinges. The all important dial face may come in various styles including moon phase dial plates, shaker styles and the smaller diameter dials that are characteristic of grandmother and granddaughter clocks. Moon phase dials are integrated with the clocks movement to calculate automatically the phases of the moon.

The heart of any clock is the movement. The movements are usually sold separately from the case kit and are available in various configurations. As a rule, the more simple the movement, the less expensive it is. The movement can easily cost as much or more than the case kit. Some movements may feature more than one chime tone. Others may have a mechanism that automatically mutes the chimes during nighttime hours. There are many other types of options available when purchasing a clock kit including different styles of pendulums and counter weights.

It is important to understand that building your own grandfather clock is not an easy business. A great deal of time and patience is needed to do the job correctly. Building something as large as a grandfather clock is not a kitchen table project. The process of finishing the wood case may involve using volatile adhesives, stains and varnishes. The importance of having a dedicated work area that is clean and well organized cannot be understated.

If you enjoy a challenge, consider building your own grandfather clock from a kit. The work will tedious but the feeling of accomplishment can last a lifetime.

A Brief History Of Dreams And Their Interpretation by badi

The interpretation of dreams dates back at least as far as 3000-4000 B.C. We know that because the interpretations of dreams were recorded in permanent form on clay tablets. It is thought that many primitive peoples were unable to initially distinguish between the real world and the dream world.

A Look At The Wide Variety Of Telescopes Used To View Into Space

January 27, 2008

When most people think of telescopes, they think of the tube-shaped refractor or reflector telescopes used by amateur astronomer. Others think big and remember that the great Hubble Telescope is out there in space, instead. In fact, there are these and many other different types of telescopes.

The visual, or optical, telescopes have been around the longest. The first refracting telescope was constructed in about 1570. Galileo did some work on it and made it better. He improved it so much in fact that he ended up with a 20-power telescope. With it, he could see some of the moons of Jupiter. Isaac Newton invented the first reflecting telescope about one hundred years after the first telescope, in 1671.

In the 1930s, Karl Jansky was interested in the short-wave radio interference that people doing Trans-Atlantic communications noticed. After much study, he ended up building a rotating radio telescope. With it he discovered how many phenomenons on earth created the static.

However, he also pulled in radio noise from the Milky Way. Radio telescopes need to be very large if they are going to override the earthly radio noise to capture astronomical radio signals. That is why the Very Large Array exists in New Mexico. Its 27 large antennas work together electronically to bring in cosmic information.

Infrared and ultraviolet are other types of telescopes. Because the light used for these telescopes is affected by the Earth's atmosphere, you will often see them on mountaintops. They are sometimes also launched into space.

The first X-ray telescope sent into space by NASA was the Uhuru, in 1970. To reflect the X-rays, paraboloidal mirrors and hyperboloidal mirrors are used. The mirrors are coated with metals, such as gold. They can only reflect at very shallow angles.

Gamma ray telescopes are also used in space. These telescopes cannot use mirrors, because mirrors cannot deflect gamma rays. The way light is detected is through the electrons that are expelled by the gamma rays. Gamma ray detectors use crystals or liquids to accept this light, which is then recorded.

The Hubble Telescope has been at the top of the size range for space-based telescopes. It has given thousands of fantastic images for scientists and the rest of the world to study and enjoy. Yet, astronomers are looking to build a telescope that would be 100 times more powerful than the Hubble Telescope. This telescope will be based on the earth instead of in space and will be a Giant Segmented Mirror Telescope.

The reason there are so many different telescopes needed is that each covers a different part of the electromagnetic spectrum. There is no one telescope that will show both the radio frequencies and the higher X-ray frequencies.

To get a clear observation of an object in space, it is important to see it in as many different wavelengths as possible. The future of the telescope is in the invention of scopes that can capture and record several wavelengths at once. Some work has been done in this direction, but as time goes by, it will become even more important.

Genealogy - Why You Should Get Involved in Your Family History

January 26, 2008

A few years ago I read a statistic that said that genealogy was the second largest hobby in the United States ? second only to gardening. It was no surprise to me as I have been finding and documenting my family tree for almost 30 years. Over that time a lot of people have asked me, “Why genealogy? What do you get out of it?” There are a lot of reasons to find out about your family and I’ll cover just a few hoping that one of them will get you started.

Babies And Dreaming

Babies And Dreaming by badi

What these babies dream about, of course, is still a mystery, but a recent study has shown that babies spent considerably more of their sleep time engaged in dream sleep. In the study, babies were found to spend approximately two thirds of their sleep time in the REM state, compared to an average of 15% to 20% for most adults.
